Composition: 'out of the frame'

Faced with a blank sheet of A1 cartridge paper + a model, most students place the model centre stage on the paper. This drawing exercise was utilised to show how another compositional approach might make a much more visually interesting study.

1. Put horizon line on paper: where floor meets wall (best not half/half - try the rule of thirds)
2. Outline of physical space mapped out
3. Model posed any number of times (here 6)
4. Random objects added too

Note: as the space is pre-mapped by each student the different placement positions of the model means she won't always appear in the drawing, or will appear part in, part out of the frame.
